(Austin, TX) – On April 28, 2021, Representative Jared Patterson passed HB 1818 out of the Texas House of Representatives. This legislation clarifies lawful commercial pet sales for cats and dogs in Texas by only allowing pet stores to sell a dog or cat if they obtained the animal from an animal control agency, an animal shelter, or an animal rescue organization.
“Texans deserve consumer protection from bad actors. HB 1818 secures our pet markets from the consequences of puppy mills, gives dogs and cats already available in the state a better chance for adoption, and ultimately keeps families and pets safe. This bipartisan legislation could not have been accomplished without the work of expert animal organizations, committed stakeholders, and diligent constituents,” said Representative Patterson. “I am proud to have had the opportunity to advocate for this critical issue in the House and look forward to continuing that advocacy as it progresses through the Senate.”
Jared Patterson represents House District 106, which encompasses the eastern portion of Denton County. During the 86th Legislative Session, Patterson authored and passed initiatives in policy areas such as transportation, education, property taxes, as well as eliminated unnecessary and burdensome government regulations. Patterson serves on the House Committees on Business & Industry, Urban Affairs, and Resolutions Calendars. He also serves on the House Interim Study Committee on Aggregate Production Operations, and the Texas Cybersecurity Council. His family resides in Frisco.
